Blues Manager Maresca Rejects Man City Speculation as Pure Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled fresh reports linking him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The 45-year-old, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extension available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for these kind of things."
He further elaborated, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a lunchtime fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Comments
Maresca's most recent statement follow in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial remarks had sparked considerable speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same building, so we speak about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to "continue to support the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, potentially in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has also been no resolution offered, leaving the disagreement unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's media briefings has grown notably awkward, raising concerns it could impact what has up to now been a promising beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's sporting situation is positive: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a better Champions League position with good performances in their remaining matches.
The prevailing uncertainty is whether this off-field dynamic might begin to affect a team that was just starting to look settled.
