On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" category.

Alarming Air Quality Levels

Various sections of Delhi recorded an air quality index above 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit established by the WHO.

In some locations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Ban and Recent Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that blankets the metropolis as colder weather sets in.

Nevertheless in recent months, the recently formed regional government appealed to the supreme court to request a easing of the restrictions.

They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of environmental and health advocates, judicial authorities approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed contamination spiking around late evening to some of the worst readings recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

International Effects

The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing deteriorating air quality in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Chronic Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the most severe levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from farm burning in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as colder air arrives.

Medical and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.

This pollution causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can even lead to cancer.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand premature mortalities annually in the city.
